Why Colorado Rustic Steel Garden Edging products are so unique

After receiving customer feedback about the need for a more consistent design — free of nail holes or warps — that still had a rustic feel, Dakota Tin introduced the Colorado Rustic Steel collection in 2019.

Corrugated Metal Landscape Edging Style Options

All of the patterns or styles from the Colorado Rustic Collection have a more consistent, uniform color pattern and have less contrast compared to the Dakota Tin Collection.

  • Rusted: Pre-rusted and created with an all-natural, accelerated rust treatment. Because the solution is spray applied, rust is more evenly distributed, the result is a more even coat of copper rust color, but still with small variations of blues and greys that you'd get from the antique galvanized style.
    • We start the rusting process, but if you'd still like more rust, learn how to increase the amount of rust here.
    • We recommend sealing this style with a clear coat, as the rust finish can rub off. Here is how to clear coat Rusted products.
    • We recommend not burying the rusted edging in the ground, as various soil types reduce the life expectancy of the material.
  • Galvalume: New galvanized steel, light silver, semi-sheen. NO RUST or color variation.
  • Antique Galvanized: Antiqued steel, dark grey, weathered, flat texture. NO RUST or color variation.
    • Finish wears with time (can produce white rust with exposure to moisture), will continue to age with exposure, and may scratch.
    • We recommend sealing this style with a clear coat for high-wear areas or where oils can get splattered, since it has a more porous surface.
  • Crinkle Black: Matte black steel with a subtle crinkle texture. Uniform black finish with no color variation. Provides a bold, modern contrast in garden and landscape applications.
  • Corten A606 Weathering Steel — 24ga: Premium weathering steel that naturally develops a rich, layered rust patina over time when exposed to the elements. Unlike the pre-rusted finish, Corten A606 continues to evolve and deepen in color, forming a stable, protective oxide layer. Color variation and patina depth will increase with exposure. This is a true commercial-grade edging.

Which edging finish lasts longest?

Galvalume and Corten A606 are the two most durable finishes for outdoor edging — they just get there differently.

  • Galvalume keeps a clean, uniform, rust-free appearance for decades. Its hot-dipped zinc/aluminum/silicon coating with a clear acrylic topcoat resists corrosion in all but the harshest conditions. The most popular choice for customers who want zero patina change over time.
  • Corten A606 is architectural-grade weathering steel in a thicker 24-gauge material. It develops a stable, self-protecting rust patina that's specifically engineered for decades of exterior exposure — Corten is the metal you see on outdoor sculpture and architectural facades for exactly this reason.
  • Antique Galvanized weathers naturally and may produce white rust over time with moisture exposure — that's expected, not a defect, but it's a more visible aging pattern than Galvalume or Corten.
  • Rusted continues to rust over time and should not be buried in soil — soil contact significantly shortens its lifespan. Best installed above-ground with stakes.
  • Crinkle Black is a coated finish — durability tracks the coating itself.

Note for Crinkle Black edging buyers: the back side of Crinkle Black material is currently white (single-sided coating). If the back of the edging will be visible — for example, between two yards or along a driveway — plan the installation orientation accordingly.
